Abstract

Urban transformation in Jakarta has accelerated rapidly over the past decade, driven by large-scale infrastructure development and increasing investment in real estate. While these changes have modernized the cityscape, they have also sparked complex social conflicts, particularly in areas undergoing gentrification. This study investigates the dynamics of social conflict arising in urban communities affected by gentrification in Jakarta. The objective is to analyze how spatial displacement, socioeconomic inequality, and contested urban identities contribute to tensions between long-term residents, new urban elites, and state or private developers. Using a qualitative case study approach, this research draws on in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis conducted in selected gentrifying neighborhoods such as Kampung Bayam and Jatinegara. The findings reveal that gentrification is not merely a physical transformation but a process marked by unequal power relations, loss of communal identity, and grassroots resistance. Social conflicts are triggered by opaque urban planning policies, forced evictions, and the erosion of traditional livelihoods. This study contributes to the growing discourse on urban justice and provides critical insights into how gentrification processes in the Global South manifest unique patterns of conflict and resilience. The research highlights the need for inclusive urban governance that balances development with the rights of existing communities.

Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to identify and analyze various communication problems that commonly arise in the implementation of religious missions, both in internal and external contexts. This research also aims to formulate relevant solutions and recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of communication in religious outreach or missionary activities. The focus of the study is not only limited to cross-cultural communication challenges—such as language barriers, differences in values, and social norms—but also includes internal communication dynamics among mission actors or members of religious organizations. Internal communication problems often become a source of misunderstanding, conflicts of interest, and lack of synergy, which ultimately hinder the achievement of mission goals. Therefore, this study emphasizes the importance of adopting inclusive, adaptive, and contextual communication approaches, especially within multicultural and pluralistic societies. The findings reveal that by implementing innovative, flexible, and empathy-based communication strategies, religious organizations can expand their audience reach and deliver religious messages more persuasively and meaningfully. This approach also has the potential to minimize conflict and increase acceptance of religious messages across diverse segments of society.

Abstract

The wave of digital transformation that has pervaded nearly every aspect of human life in the twenty-first century carries implications that extend far beyond mere technological change. This shift reshapes the ways in which Muslims in Indonesia conduct dakwah (Islamic proselytisation), which has historically relied on face-to-face forums, religious study circles (majelis taklim), and Friday sermons. In the contemporary digital landscape, dakwah has evolved into digital content disseminated freely across platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, driven by the rapid growth of generative artificial intelligence most notably ChatGPT, launched by OpenAI in late 2022. This study examines the perceptions of dai (Islamic preachers) in Cirebon, West Java, toward the use of ChatGPT in the production of digital dakwah content, employing the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as its analytical framework. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with purposive sampling, data were gathered from five informants through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and subsequently analysed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña interactive model. Findings reveal that perceived usefulness is generally positive, particularly regarding content-production efficiency, whilst perceived ease of use varies substantially according to age and digital-literacy level. Three attitudinal typologies were identified: affirmative-pragmatic, critical-selective, and conservative-apprehensive, each grounded in distinct theological, epistemological, and ethical considerations. Behavioural intention to continue using ChatGPT is moderated by social norms within the religious community and the availability of institutional support.
