Abstract

Discriminatory acts, as an example of social conflict, are cultural factors that shape a person's personality. This phenomenon appears in literary works through the characters involved in them. This discrimination is a factor in someone developing into a neurotic personality. Neurotic characters use patterns or methods to overcome their anxiety. The object of this research is the neurotic responses carried out by female characters after experiencing discrimination, expressed using Karen Horney's social psychoanalytic theory. The research method used descriptive qualitative. Data were collected using reading and note-taking techniques. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. After the research was conducted, the results found that forms of discrimination include the subordination of women, actions of value or self-esteem, physical violence, labor exploitation, and sexual exploitation. There are two neurotic responses used to overcome anxiety: moving towards people and moving againts people. This research is expected to serve as a reference for other research related to literary psychology as well as education on the importance of social support for one's psychological development.
