Abstract

This study examined high school students’ views of their teachers using interpersonal communication in Teaching English as Foreign Language (TEFL). The respondents involved 38 students as reached saturated data, which were taken from six classes taught by two EFL teachers (male and female) at a high school in South Sulawesi province, Indonesia. A semi-structured interview was employed with students to collect the data. The semi-structured interview data were categorized and reported descriptively according to DeVito's (1997) effective interpersonal communication: openness, empathy, supportiveness, positive feelings, and equality. This study reveals that students' perception shows that both teachers conduct favorable and unfavorable interpersonal communication verbally or non-verbally in TEFL. This study also indicates that teachers’ cross-gender using nonverbal communication perceives as an inconvenience, touch, and personal space. These contrarieties propose that teachers consider their students’ culture, beliefs, or preferences while utilizing interpersonal communication in TEFL, especially personal space and touch at the high school level.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a board game as an interactive English learning media for elementary school students in rural Papua. At the elementary level, English has been mandated as a compulsory subject; however, interest and motivation to learn remain low in the rural regions of Papua. The availability of English teaching media that is relevant to the local context of Papua's children is still limited. This research employed the research and development method with the Plomp model, which includes investigation, design, realization, evaluation and revision, and implementation phases. This study involved 15 elementary indigenous Papuan students and 2 teachers. Validation sheets, learning tests, and interview serve as the research instruments. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results indicate that the board game is feasible to use as an English introduction media for elementary school students in the rural Papua region, especially South Papua. Media validity tests show a score of 84.25%, while practicality validation indicates 76.5% both are in the high category. Additionally, learning outcomes demonstrate that 80% of students perform at a good level, confirming the media's effectiveness. It can be concluded that the Basic English Board Game is a valid and appropriate tool for introducing English to elementary students in the rural regions of South Papua.

Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance students' understanding of sanitation practices and develop literacy and critical thinking skills based on higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) through the Smart and Healthy Children program conducted in the 3T (frontier, outermost, and least developed) regions of South Papua. The activities consisted of five stages: preparation, optimization of sanitation and literacy facilities, teacher training, student habituation, and evaluation. The evaluation instruments used interviews and student learning outcome tests which were then analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results of this community service program showed a significant improvement in students’ understanding across four aspects: the importance of sanitation, sanitation procedures, reading comprehension, and reading analysis. Moreover, positive behavioral changes were observed among students, including regular habits of bathing, hand washing, brushing teeth, using latrines, and trimming nails, all of which were monitored by teachers. The use of an outdoor learning garden also contributed to a more dynamic learning environment. Overall, the program not only successfully enhanced students’ health knowledge but also fostered enthusiasm and engagement in daily literacy activities, demonstrating its effectiveness in developing both sanitation awareness and literacy skills among students in the 3T regions.
