Abstract

Speaking is a communicative and repetitive activity supported by simple structure and clear meaning. This study aimed to identify speaking difficulties among second-semester students of the English Department at FKIP Universitas Ekasakti. The main problems found were lack of pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. The research used a descriptive quantitative method. The population consisted of 11 students, and total sampling was applied, meaning all students participated. A speaking test was used as the research instrument. Students were asked to perform in front of the class, and their speaking abilities were analyzed using specific speaking indicators.The results showed that out of 11 students, 1 student achieved a very good level, 8 students were in the good category, and 2 students were in the average category. The overall average score was 76, indicating that students’ speaking ability, especially in interactive speaking through group discussion, was at a good level.

Abstract

This research was motivated by several problems in students' reading comprehension that researchers found during pre-research activities in Class XI at SMK N 5 Padang, they are lack of vocabulary, not understanding the main idea, and lack of interest in learning English. Therefore, The objective of this research was to analyze students' reading comprehension using report texts. This research used a descriptive research. researcher applied cluster random sampling to three classes, namely Class XI TPM 1, TPM 2, and TPM 3 at SMK N 5 Padang. There were 89 students as samples from three classes. The class selected from the three classes was XI TPM 1, which had 30 students. Data were obtained through multiple choice tests. The results showed that students' reading comprehension abilities were generally in the average category, with an average score of 51. As many as 0% of students were classified as very good, 13% good, 50% average, 20% poor, and 17% very poor. The most common difficulties experienced by students were in determining the main idea, understanding the meaning of words, and finding important information in the text. This shows that many students have not yet developed sufficient reading skills to understand report texts effectively.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze students’ understanding of language features in descriptive texts by using Fix-Up Strategy in class X of SMK N 6 Padang. This article in identifying students’ difficulties in choosing simple present tense, adjectives, nouns, and adverbs when reading descriptive texts. This study used a quantitative descriptive design. Data were collected through an objective reading test consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions. This method was chosen to measure students’ ability to identify the correct language features in descriptive texts.The results of the study showed that most students demonstrated a good understanding of descriptive texts, with an average score 78. Based on the test results, 56% of students were categorized as excellent, 23% good, 9% fair, and 12% poor. However, some students still faced challenges in correctly identifying adjectives, the simple present tense, and adverbs, as reflected in specific questions where errors were commited. Therefore, further support is recommended to address these grammatical difficulties and enhance students’ mastery of language features in descriptive texts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students’ speaking ability through storytelling in the F2 phase at SMA Negeri 5 Padang. The study was motivated by observations that many students still face challenges in speaking English fluently and confidently. A descriptive research design was employed, involving 28 students selected through random sampling. Data were collected using a speaking test focusing on pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The results indicate that students’ speaking ability falls into the moderate category with an average score of 63. Pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and fluency were categorized as moderate, while comprehension was categorized as high. The main problems identified were nervousness, lack of self-confidence, and limited vocabulary, which affected students’ fluency and performance. This study concludes that storytelling can be an effective medium for improving students’ speaking ability and confidence in English communication.
