Abstract

Background: The transition toward Maritime Industry 4.0 requires maritime vocational institutions to integrate smart ship technologies into their curricula. This shift demands innovative pedagogical approaches that merge STEM principles with immersive tools such as Augmented Reality (AR) to strengthen competencies in intelligent engine monitoring systems in accordance with STCW standards. Aim: This study investigates the extent to which STEM-integrated AR learning media supports the development of marine engineering competencies among Indonesian maritime vocational students, and how such contributes to evidence-based instructional frameworks for technology-enhanced maritime education. Method: A qualitative interpretive phenomenological approach was implemented over sixteen weeks involving twenty-five marine engineering students, six instructors, and five industry experts. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, systematic observations, and weekly reflection journals, and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis. Results: Five learning themes were identified: transformative visualization, authentic STEM integration, increased technological self-efficacy, collaborative knowledge construction, and contextual implementation challenges. Competency assessments showed notable gains, with MECAI scores reaching cognitive (84.2%), psychomotor (81.6%), affective (86.9%), and digital literacy (87.3%) domains. STEM Integration Effectiveness also demonstrated strong technology (85.4%) and engineering (81.7%) performance. Conclusion: The findings validate AR-enhanced STEM learning as an effective approach for strengthening STCW-aligned competencies and offer context-sensitive guidance for maritime institutions, particularly those operating under resource limitations.

Abstract

Simulation-Based Learning (SBL) is a pivotal component in maritime education, offering realistic and immersive experiences for cadets. This research critically evaluates SBL's efficacy among 30 cadets undergoing vocational practice or internships, aligning with International Maritime Organization (IMO) - Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW). Through qualitative analysis, SBL was found to significantly enhance cadets' competency, decision-making skills, and confidence in handling maritime challenges. Challenges such as technical issues and fidelity discrepancies were noted, underscoring the need for ongoing improvement. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of aligning maritime education with international standards to ensure standardized and comprehensive training. The findings contribute to the discourse on SBL's role in maritime education, highlighting its potential to prepare cadets for real-world scenarios effectively.

Abstract

This study addresses the limited empirical evidence on the role of religious practices in maritime human resource management (HRM), particularly in relation to the performance and workplace acceptance of Muslim seafarers in multicultural shipping environments. This study aims to examine the relationship between Muslim seafarers’ religious practices and their job performance, adaptability, and end-user acceptance in the global shipping industry. A quantitative survey design was employed, and data were collected from 50 Muslim seafarers using a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with SmartPLS 4.0. The results indicate that religious practices significantly improve job performance (β = 0.844, p < 0.001) and adaptability (β = 0.592, p = 0.028). However, religious practices do not have a significant direct effect on end-user acceptance (β = 0.024, p = 0.344), and adaptability also has no significant effect on end-user acceptance (β = -0.012, p = 0.564). In contrast, job performance has a positive and significant effect on end-user acceptance (β = 0.478, p = 0.034). These findings suggest that while religious adherence enhances individual effectiveness and social adjustment, professional competence—particularly job performance—remains the primary factor shaping acceptance by shipowners and international stakeholders in the maritime sector.
