Background: Maternal mental disorders during pregnancy are associated with a range of adverse health outcomes for infants. ReÂcent studies indiÂcate the possible mechanism of maternal mental health disorders assoÂciated with fetal developÂment through progÂramÂÂming effect. This study aimed to sysÂtemaÂtÂically review the effect of anteÂnatal mental health disorders on fetal growth.Subjects and Method: This was a sysÂtemÂatic review. The articles were selected from PsycÂINFO, Medline, Web of Science, EmÂÂÂbase, and PubMed journal databases puÂblisÂhed from July to SeptemÂber 2018. The keywords for this review included maternal mental health AND fetal growth, postÂpartum deÂpÂressÂÂion AND fetal growth, maternal mental health AND fetal growth AND review. As many as 11 articles were selected for this stuÂdy from 575 articles. Results: Maternal mental health during pregÂnancy was associated with fetal head cirÂcumÂÂference growth through 2 mechanism: (1) InÂcreased maternal stress response modifies neuÂroÂenÂdocrine function, which included changes in cortisol regulation, adrenoÂcortiÂcoÂtropic, adrenaÂline and norÂadrenaline horÂmoÂnes levels; and (2) Decreased 11β-hydroxyÂsteroid dehydrogenase (11β-HSD2) enzyme regulation in placenta. It decreased11β-HSD2 level, increaÂsÂed fetal glucoÂcorticoids circuÂlaÂtion, and affectÂed on fetal head growth restriction. Conclusion: Maternal mental health during pregnancy is associated with fetal head circÂumÂÂfeÂrence growth restriction. Keywords: maternal mental health, fetal head circumference, growth, systematic reÂviewCorrespondence: Rina Tri Handayani.
