DEVELOPING STUDENTS’S SPEAKING ABILITY THROUGH ROLE PLAY

Abstract

Abstrak: Judul penelitian ini adalah " Mengembangkan Kemampuan Berbicara  Siswa Melalui Role Play " . Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas V ' di SDN 09 Pontianak . Dalam melakukan penelitian ini , peneliti menerapkan desain pra - eksperimental , yang diikuti tiga fase; pretest , treatment  dan posttest . Semua kegiatan treatment dilakukan dalam tiga kali pertemuan . Untuk mengumpulkan data dari kemampuan berbicara , peneliti menggunakan tes lisan , yang dilakukan pada  percakapan berpasangan . Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas V SDN 09 Pontianak . Ada tiga kelas dari kelas ini , VA , VB dan VC dengan jumlah siswa 105 . Dalam melakukan penelitian ini , peneliti memilih kelas VC sebagai sampel penelitian . Dengan cara ini , peneliti menerapkan teknik cluster sampling . Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hipotesis alternatif diterima dan hipotesis nol ditolak . Hal itu membuktikan bahwa prestasi siswa pretest ke posttest meningkat dengan interval 18,5 . Rata pretest adalah 42,3 , yang menentukan kualifikasi buruk . Namun, skor posttest adalah 60,8 , yang ditentukan sebagai rata-rata untuk kualifikasi baik . Dari hasil penelitian ini , dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan role play efektif untuk mengembangkan kemampuan berbahasa siswa . Dengan menggunakan role play , para siswa diberi banyak waktu untuk melatih kemampuan mereka berbicara.   Kata Kunci: bermain peran, pra-eksperimen, Kemampuan berbicara Abstract: The title of this research is “ Developing Students’s Speaking Ability Through Role Play”.The aim of this study was to improve the fifth grade students’ speaking ability at SDN 09 Pontianak. In conducting this research, the researcher applied the pre-experimental design, which was followed three phases of time; pretest, treatment and posttest. All the activities of treatment were done in three times of meeting. To collect the data of speaking ability, the researcher used oral test, which was conducted in pair conversation. The population of this research was the fifth grade students of SDN 09 Pontianak. There were three classes of this grade; VA, VB and VC with the total number of the students 105. In conducting this research, the researcher has chosen class VC as the sample of this research. By having this way, the researcher applied cluster sampling technique. The result of this research showed that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. It was proved that the achievement of students pretest to posttest increased with the interval 18.5. The pretest score was 42.3, which determines poor qualification. However, the posttest score was 60.8, which determined as average to good qualification. From the result of this research, it can be concluded that the use of role play is effective to develop the students’ speaking ability. By using role play, the students are given much time to practice their speaking.   Key Word: Role play, pre-experimen, speaking abilisy
