Abstract

Throughout history, market has developed in different forms and functions. In pre-industrial societies, the presence of market and money did not necessarilyaffect the economic system. Karl Polanyi even stressed that the market was only onepossible way of allocating resources. Redistribution and reciprocityare other alternatives, and historically more important than the market. The market dominates thehuman activities only when it transformed land, labor and money into “fictitiouscommodities”. In such case, the income, the bulk of survival, was dependent upon themarket. Polanyi described the process as transformation from market as practiced inthe old pre-industrial society into market economy. This process, in turn, caused thedegradation that urges government to protect all human activities from the marketdomination.
