Abstract

Self-medication with antibiotics still remains a problem in Indonesia and most of antibiotics sources waspharmacy. Several pharmacies might refuse to serve antibiotics without prescriptions but the number of selfmedication with antibiotics remains high. This study aimed to analyze the correlation of pharmacy visitorsantibiotics knowledge to their respond through self-medication with antibiotics refusal. A cross sectionalstudy was conducted at a pharmacy in Kebonsari Surabaya from January to February 2020 usingquestionnaire to measure respondents antibiotics knowledge and their respond when facing refusal ingetting antibiotics. Respondents knowledge was classified into three categories and was analyzed for itscorrelation to their respond using Fisher exact test. There were 82 respondents recruited. Of them, 64,63%had a good knowledge and the remains had enough knowledge about antibiotics while 75,60% hadexperience in doing self-medications with antibiotics. There were no correlation between the level ofknowledge and their experience in doing self-medication with antibiotics (p-value 0,068). However, the levelof knowledge significantly correlate to their respond in facing pharmacy refusal that most of whom hadgood knowledge were tent to face the doctor while the majority of whom had enough knowledge were likelyto go to the other pharmacy which still serve antibiotics without prescriptions. The strengthening ineducation and regulation about antibiotics will play a big contibrution in controlling self-medication withantibiotics phenomenon.
