Abstract

Nicæno-Constantinopolitan Creed (NCC) is mostly known for the filioque controversy, as it is believed to be the main culprit behind the Great Schism. While the Western Church argues that the phrase filioque is necessary, the Eastern Church holds that the Spirit proceeds only from the Father (monopatrism). In this study I propose an analytic account and a model called ‘Equivalential Monotheism’ that could facilitate the claim of both sides. It is also compatible with the growing contemporary view of Social Trinitarianism. Against its rival models, Equivalential Monotheism proposes that the relation within the Godhead is neither causal, temporal, nor explanatory but referential. I argue that in a referential relation, both filioque and monopatrism are logically equivalent and neither the insertion nor the omission of the phrase filioque involves substantial change.
