Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Mosquito-borne diseases are associated with a high risk of mortality and morbidity. One strategy to reduce the risk of these diseases is the application of larvicides in powder form. Papaya (Carica papaya) leaves have demonstrated potential as a natural larvicide due to their bioactive compounds. Methods: This quantitative study employed a pre-experimental design using an Intact Group Comparison approach. Data were collected using an observation checklist. Samples were selected through purposive sampling, with a total of 50 mosquito larvae allocated into four treatment groups receiving papaya leaf powder at doses of 60 mg, 150 mg, 300 mg, and 500 mg, and one control group. Results: The lowest larval mortality was observed in the 60 mg treatment group (10%), while the highest mortality occurred in the 500 mg treatment group (60%). Statistical analysis showed that the 60 mg, 150 mg, and 300 mg treatment groups had p-values > 0.05, indicating no significant differences compared with the control group. In contrast, the 500 mg treatment group showed a p-value of 0.011 (< 0.05), demonstrating a statistically significant difference in larval mortality compared with the control group. Conclusion: Papaya (Carica papaya) leaf powder at a dose of 500 mg significantly increased mosquito larval mortality, indicating its potential as a natural larvicide.
