Erosi marin juga menyebabkan luas hutan mangrove di beberapa desa yang terletak di pantai menjadi berkurang bahkan hilang. Perubahan garis pantai berupa pengurangan pantai karena erosi pantai yang bervariasi terutama pada hampir sebagian besar di sepanjang pantai bagian Barat dari Kota Ternate, seperti di pantai Gambesi, pantai Sasa, pantai Castela, pantai Rua, pantai Taduma, pantai Togafo, pantai Takome. Erosi marin yang terjadi di Kola Ternate dominan dipengaruhi oleh faktor angin, pasang surut, arus, dan gelombang. Gelombang yang bersifat destruktif umumnya memiliki sifat yang merusak, hal ini dapat terjadi karena sifat gelombang yang destruktif mempunyai ketinggian dan kecepatan rambat yang sangat tinggi.
