Referring expression is a form of language used to refer to or identify an object, person, or concept in the context of conversation or writing. This research analyzes the use of referring expressions in the short story "The Deer and the Crocodile" by Sindu Ann. The aim of this research is to analyze the referring expressions used in the short story The Deer and The Crocodile by Shindu Ann. This research uses qualitative research. The approach used is content analysis because the data analyzed is in the form of short story text content. The results of this research were the discovery of several referring expressions. The referring expressions analyzed involved types such as descriptive nominal phrases, singular pronouns and plural pronouns. An in-depth analysis of these types of referring expressions provides an understanding of how writers build characters, conflicts and moral messages in stories.
