Abstract

Determinants of Early Breastfeeding Initiation in Postpartum Women in Ladang Bambu Village, Medan Tuntungan District in 2023Background:Early Initiation of Breastfeeding (IMD) is an important process to start breastfeeding immediately after birth, providing benefits such as preventing infant mortality, supporting the success of exclusive breastfeeding, and providing colostrum. However, the implementation of IMD in Indonesia is still low, at 57%, with the lowest coverage in Ladang Bambu Village, Medan Tuntungan District (24.2%), far from the Ministry of Health's target of 50%.Objective:This study aims to identify the factors that most influence early initiation of breastfeeding in Ladang Bambu Village, Medan Tuntungan District.Method:The study was conducted with a cross-sectional design in August 2023–November 2023, using secondary data from the 2023 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey. The analysis was carried out using multivariate logistic regression on 669 samples of mothers who gave birth in the last five years. Results:The study found three variables as determinants of IMD, with the dominant factor being the type of delivery. Mothers who gave birth by cesarean section were 5 times more likely to not do IMD compared to mothers who gave birth normally (OR 5.060; 95% CI 2.714-9.435).Conclusion: The type of delivery is the main factor that influences the implementation of IMD. It is recommended that health workers provide counseling to mothers regarding the importance of IMD and support its implementation, especially for mothers who undergo cesarean section.
