<![CDATA[The Role of the first language on the Indonesian language skills of IV grade students at GMIH Dorume elementary school very important to investigated as a reference in acquiring and learning a second language. This study aims to identify the language used in the family and community environment, the first role of students in interacting at school and the impact of students’ first language on Indonesian language skills. This research uses qualitative research methods, with research instruments of observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analyzed through the stages of data generation, data display, and conclusions. The results of the study showed that the language used by students in interacting in the family environment were Loloda, Galela, and Sangir language. The role of the first language in interactions at school is very strong so that even though the teacher has taught as much as possible, it is the supervision in the family environment that does not pay much attention to the students’ use of Indonesian. The impact of the strong influence of the first language makes students’ Indonesian language skills weak, so that sometimes the first language still dominates in students’ language activities.]]>
