Pijat Terapeutik sebagai Evidence Based Practice pada Pasien Kanker untuk Mengurangi Distress: Therapeutic Massage as Evidence Based Practice in Cancer Patients to Reduce Distress

Abstract

Massage therapy, is the most widely and safely complementary therapy used. Psychological problems as a result of physical disorders more common in patients with chronic diseases, especially cancer. The objective is to describe the application of therapeutic massage to reduce distress as an Evidence Based Nursing (EBN). The method of this paper wasa case study conducted in the implementation EBN at inpatient Teratai Dharmais Cancer Hospital, Jakarta, for 2 weeks, in the span of 16 April to 9 May 2014. The massage is done for 3 times a week, 20 minutes, in 2 weeks, so each patient getting 6 sessions of therapeutic massage. Participants in the application of this EBN all female, with an age range 27 -58 year, with 4 people breast cancer, 1 person cervical cancer, 1 person ovarian cancer, 1 person thyroid cancer, 1 person NHL. After therapeutic massage session in accordance with the method Ahles, et al, (1999), obtained a therapeutic massage session is able to reduce patient anxiety, seen from ESAS scores decrease anxiety, able to relax the patient. All 4 patients who underwent massage therapy on the first day, got anxious complaints are 2 people, 2 severe anxiety at the end of the session the patient is not got to worry anymore. The response of patients after undergoing a reporting session body fresher and more restful sleep. In patients who complain of severe pain by administering a therapeutic massage that had previously been given analgesics, and relaxation techniques, known to the administration of a therapeutic massage although it has not been able to drastically reduce pain, patients can adapt to the pain, the patient is more constructive coping.Suggestions are massage therapy may be an option as well as non-pharmacological interventions are applied in a non-invasive reduce patient distress, can be performed by nurses room through a brief training on technical procedures therapeutic massage. For the implementation of effective massage on the patient, let the hospital provides facilities such as massage chairs, massage beds and therapists are skilled in the art.
