Abstract

This research paper aims to explore the types of figurative language employed in the song lyrics of Rex Orange County, examine the messages conveyed through these figurative languages, and analyze their functions. The study adopts a content analysis methodology and draws on the theories of Keraf (2009), Leech (2009), and Perrine (1969) for the analysis. The analysis reveals a total of 67 instances of figurative language in the selected songs of Rex Orange County. Emotional intensity emerges as the most prevalent type, accounting for 36% of the identified instances. Additionally, imaginative pleasure and means of concentration are found to be prevalent functions at 31% and 21% respectively. These findings emphasize the artist's adeptness in using figurative language to evoke strong emotions and convey profound meanings within their music. The study offers insights into the utilization of figurative language to enhance the poetic experience and effectively communicate sensitive topics.
