Abstract

Displaying East Javanese Community Behavior through Texts in the Public Space of the Great Mosque: A Linguistic Landscape StudyThe grand mosque serves not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of Islamic icons, history, community activities, and the identity of a city. This study aims to investigate (1) the forms and patterns of language use, (2) the symbolic-informational functions, (3) the character, behavior, motivation, lifestyle, culture, and economy through text messages. A total of 1,818 photo data were collected from the texts found on the grand mosques in 38 cities/regencies in East Java. Data collection was conducted through observation and documentation (photography). Data analysis employed the Linguistic Landscape approach by Landry and Bourhis (1997), accompanied by interviews. The findings reveal that 13 languages are involved in the texts found in public spaces around the grand mosques in East Java. The dominance of the Indonesian language is evident in monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual patterns. The texts on the grand mosques in East Java reflect various community activities, including worship, health, education, economics, and historical preservation. However, these texts also highlight undesirable behaviors in the community, such as health issues, security concerns, and environmental issues.
