Abstract

This study explores the application of mujadalah principles argumentative yet ethical discourse derived from the Qur'an in the context of political debates, focusing on the 2024 North Sumatra gubernatorial election. The research investigates how Qur'anic values such as hikmah (wisdom), mau’izhah hasanah (good counsel), and jidal billati hiya ahsan (debate in the best manner) are manifested in candidate interactions during televised debates. Using a qualitative descriptive approach and thematic content analysis, the study analyzes debate transcripts and non-verbal expressions of the two candidate pairs. Findings reveal that while implementation of mujadalah remains partial, elements of respectful dialogue, rational argumentation, and emotional self-control were evident. These principles significantly enhance the quality of political discourse and foster public trust. The study concludes that embedding Islamic communication ethics in political practices is not only possible but necessary to elevate democratic culture in Indonesia. The integration of religious ethics into electoral debates contributes to more civil, substantive, and educational public dialogue.
