Abstract

Abstract: Plastic waste is a serious challenge in Indonesia. Non-degradable plastic waste and the practice of burning trash by the community have created new environmental problems such as air pollution, land degradation, and ecosystem disruption. This community service activity aims to empower the community by enhancing hard skills, specifically skills related to education and training on the utilization of plastic waste—particularly used plastic bottles—as planting media for family medicinal plants (TOGA).The method consisted of a pre-test, education sessions, hands-on practice of creating wick system hydroponic planting media using used plastic bottles, TOGA planting, and a post-test as evaluation. The participants were 30 housewives who are members of the PKK. The results showed a significant improvement in community knowledge with an average increase of 52% from pre-test to post-test scores. The use of plastic bottles as planting media proved to be simple, low-cost, eco-friendly, and effective in supporting TOGA cultivation. This program not only contributed to reducing plastic waste but also supported public health and opened opportunities for economic value creation.
