Abstract

Education and Assistance in Non-Pharmacological Therapy for Blood Glucose Control among Patients with Diabetes Mellitus in Sidodadi Village Diabetes mellitus is a non-communicable disease with an increasing prevalence and a high risk of complications due to uncontrolled blood glucose levels. Blood glucose control can be achieved not only through pharmacological treatment but also through non-pharmacological approaches that emphasize education and lifestyle modification. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of patients with diabetes mellitus in controlling blood glucose levels through non-pharmacological therapy. The activity was conducted at the Village Maternity Post (Polindes) of Sidodadi Village, Langsa Lama District, Langsa City, on August 31–September 1, 2025, involving 15 participants diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. The methods included a pretest, interactive health education, simulation and demonstration of non-pharmacological therapies such as diabetic foot exercises, autogenic relaxation, and progressive muscle relaxation, followed by a posttest. Blood glucose level measurements were also performed as part of health screening. The results showed that most participants had blood glucose levels above normal ranges (114–428 mg/dl). Knowledge evaluation demonstrated a substantial improvement, with the proportion of participants in the “good” knowledge category increasing from 33.3% in the pretest to 86.67% in the posttest. Participants showed high enthusiasm and active participation throughout the program. This community service activity contributed to improving health literacy and empowering patients to apply non-pharmacological therapies to support blood glucose reduction and stabilization. The program offers a community-based promotive and preventive model that can be replicated in similar settings
