Abstract

This study discusses how students from other regions of UIN SMH BANTEN adapt to the new environment they live in. The aim is to understand how students from other regions adapt to different environments before. Many students from the faculty of da'wah UIN SMH BANTEN live in the Andamui area which is located behind or next to the campus. According to the Andamui sub-district, there are around 10,000 students who live in Andamui. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach to explore the adaptation process of students from other regions in the new environment, researchers collect data using interview techniques that involve direct interaction between researchers and research participants to gain a deep understanding of the experiences, views and perspectives of individuals, after the data is collected, researchers conduct data analysis which is the process of arranging and arranging transcripts from the interview results so that researchers can follow up on the results of their findings. In this study, the U-Curve model was analyzed, which consists of four stages, namely honeymoon, crisis, recovery, and adjustment. The crisis phase was felt by almost all informants, which was marked by feelings of discomfort, stress, confusion, and then culture shock due to environmental differences. Informants A, D, N, and S experienced all phases of adaptation, while M did not experience the honeymoon phase and immediately entered the crisis phase. Informant M was trapped in a prolonged crisis phase because cultural differences were considered a major problem and could not accept the situation in the new environment, in addition to informant A who experienced a rapid adaptation process. Other factors that helped, such as support from the surrounding environment and family, were proven by informants D, N, and S.
