Researchers found that there were still several second grade students at Mojoagung 01 Elementary School who had low reading abilities, such as difficulty recognizing letters, stringing together syllables/words, spelling words and reading sentences well and fluently. Furthermore, there have been no literacy studies or research related to reading skills at the school. This research is also motivated by the importance of reading skills for student success. Good reading skills have a big influence on understanding the concepts and theories studied at school. Conversely, poor reading skills can be a hindering factor in students educational success. This research uses a qualitative research type. Data collection in this study was carried out using interview and questionnaire methods with class II teachers and class II students of Mojoagung 01 Elementary School, Pati Regency. The results of this study indicate that the initial reading ability of grade II students of Mojoagung 01 Elementary School, Pati Regency, There are 15 students (71.43%) of whom are fluent in reading correctly and there are 6 students (28.57%) of whom are not yet fluent in reading.
