Abstract

This research aims to describe the role of Islamic Religious Education and Character Education in shaping the religious character of students at SMP Negeri 1 Mendo Barat, Bangka Regency. The study is motivated by the phenomenon of declining student discipline and responsibility, which reflects the weakening of religious values within the school environment. Islamic Religious Education plays a crucial role in forming students’ character through the internalization of Islamic values encompassing faith, morality, and worship. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach. The research subjects include the school principal, Islamic Religious Education teachers, and students of SMP Negeri 1 Mendo Barat. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the techniques of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that: (1) The fundamental concept of Islamic Religious and Character Education at SMP Negeri 1 Mendo Barat focuses on shaping students’ religious character through teacher exemplarity and habituation of religious practices at school; (2) Islamic Religious Education teachers play a dominant role as role models, mentors, and motivators of students’ religious activities; and (3) Supporting factors include a religious school environment and parental involvement, while inhibiting factors consist of limited supervision outside of school and the negative influence of technology and peer association. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan peran Pendidikan Agama Islam dan Budi Pekerti dalam membentuk karakter religius siswa di SMP Negeri 1 Mendo Barat, Kabupaten Bangka. Penelitian ini berangkat dari fenomena menurunnya kedisiplinan dan tanggung jawab siswa yang mencerminkan rendahnya karakter religius di lingkungan sekolah. Pendidikan Agama Islam memiliki peran penting dalam pembentukan karakter peserta didik melalui internalisasi nilai-nilai ajaran Islam yang meliputi aspek keimanan, akhlak, dan ibadah. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif. Subjek penelitian meliputi kepala sekolah, guru Pendidikan Agama Islam, dan siswa SMP Negeri 1 Mendo Barat. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi, kemudian dianalisis dengan teknik reduksi data, penyajian data, serta penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: (1) Konsep dasar Pendidikan Agama Islam dan Budi Pekerti di SMP Negeri 1 Mendo Barat berorientasi pada pembentukan karakter religius siswa melalui pembelajaran yang berpusat pada keteladanan guru dan pembiasaan sikap religius di sekolah; (2) Peran guru Pendidikan Agama Islam sangat dominan sebagai teladan, pembimbing, dan penggerak kegiatan keagamaan siswa; (3) Faktor pendukung pembentukan karakter religius antara lain lingkungan sekolah yang agamis dan dukungan orang tua, sedangkan faktor penghambatnya adalah kurangnya pengawasan di luar sekolah serta pengaruh teknologi dan pergaulan bebas.
