ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis penerapan model pembelajaran Problem Based Learning (PBL) dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa pada mata pelajaran Ilmu Pengetahuan Sosial (IPS) di SMP Don Bosco Tomohon. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga mengkaji hambatan-hambatan yang dihadapi dalam implementasi PBL. Pendekatan penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif, dengan lokasi penelitian di SMP Don Bosco Tomohon. Informan dalam penelitian ini terdiri dari Kepala Sekolah, Wakil Kepala Sekolah Bidang Kurikulum, Guru IPS, Wali Kelas VIII B, dan peserta didik. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi, sedangkan analisis data menggunakan teknik triangulasi sumber. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan model PBL mampu meningkatkan aktivitas belajar, kemampuan berpikir kritis, serta motivasi siswa. Meskipun demikian, beberapa hambatan seperti keterbatasan waktu, ketidakmerataan kemampuan siswa, dan adaptasi terhadap metode baru masih ditemukan. Secara keseluruhan, model PBL dinilai efektif sebagai strategi pembelajaran yang relevan untuk mendorong keterampilan abad ke-21 dalam konteks pembelajaran IPS. ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model in improving students’ critical thinking skills in the Social Studies subject at SMP Don Bosco Tomohon. Additionally, the study examines the challenges encountered during the implementation of the PBL model. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach, conducted at SMP Don Bosco Tomohon. The informants in this study consist of the Principal, Vice Principal of Curriculum, Social Studies teacher, Class VIII B homeroom teacher, and students. Data collection techniques include interviews, observations, and documentation, while data analysis uses source triangulation. The results of the study show that the implementation of the PBL model can enhance student learning activity, critical thinking ability, and motivation. However, some challenges such as limited instructional time, varying student abilities, and adaptation to new methods were identified. Overall, the PBL model is considered an effective instructional strategy to promote 21st-century skills in the context of Social Studies learning.
