Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers in enhancing students' environmental awareness at MI Al-Khairat Biromaru, while simultaneously identifying the impact of that role on students' environmental behavioral changes across cognitive, affective, and psychomotor dimensions. This study employed a qualitative approach with a single case study design. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with the PAI teacher, school principal, and students, as well as documentation study. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model developed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, encompassing the stages of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, with data validity ensured through source triangulation and technique triangulation. The findings reveal that PAI teachers at MI Al-Khairat Biromaru carry out multidimensional roles, functioning as instructors who integrate Islamic values regarding the environment into learning activities, as genuine role models in environmentally friendly behavior, as motivators who drive environmental awareness programs, and as mentors who cultivate students' awareness on a personal and spiritual level. These roles have a significant impact on the formation of students' understanding, caring attitudes, and concrete behaviors in maintaining the cleanliness and sustainability of the madrasah environment consistently and independently, while simultaneously giving rise to a deeply rooted positive environmental culture within the institution. The findings of this study contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 on quality education, Goal 13 on climate action, and Goal 15 on the preservation of terrestrial ecosystems, through education grounded in Islamic values from an early age.
