Abstract

The integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) in higher education has transformed learning practices towards a more interactive, flexible, and student-centered learning environment. However, the use of AI in active learning also raises issues related to the dynamics of academic interactions, knowledge construction, and the quality of student engagement in the learning process. This study aims to analyze the integration of Generative AI in active learning, examine the dynamics of student interactions in AI-based learning, and explore the process of student knowledge construction in the context of digital higher education. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of students and lecturers involved in AI-based learning. Data were analyzed using descriptive and thematic analysis to identify interaction patterns, learning experiences, and the process of student knowledge construction. The results show that Generative AI functions not only as a technological tool, but also as a pedagogical mediator that supports the exploration of ideas, academic reflection, collaborative discussions, and student self-directed learning. The integration of AI transforms learning interactions into a multidimensional process involving students, lecturers, and digital technology. This study also found that the critical and reflective use of AI can strengthen knowledge construction and active student engagement, while excessive reliance on AI has the potential to diminish critical thinking skills and result in superficial learning. This research contributes to the development of Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) studies by confirming that the effectiveness of Generative AI depends on the integration of critical, ethical, reflective, and student-centered learning-oriented pedagogical approaches.
