Abstract

The crisis of meaning, the increasing prevalence of mental health problems, and the growing tendency toward nihilism among Generation Z indicate that modern education, which is largely oriented toward academic achievement, has not fully addressed the existential and spiritual needs of today’s young generation. Various data show a rise in mental health disorders, identity confusion, and a weak long-term life orientation among adolescents. This study aims to analyze the values of the concept al-‘abid al-muraqabah in Muraqi al-‘Ubudiyah by Shaykh Muhammad Nawawi ibn Umar al-Jawi al-Bantani and their relevance as a strategy for preventing nihilism among Generation Z. The research focuses on the internalization al-‘abid al-murāqabah in Muraqi al-‘Ubudiyah and its relevance as a strategy for preventing nihilism and restoring a sense of meaning in the lives of Generation Z in the digital era. This study employs a qualitative approach using a library research method, with Muraqi al-‘Ubudiyah as the primary source, and the theories of nihilism proposed by Friedrich Nietzsche and Albert Camus, as well as Thomas Lickona’s theory of character education, as the analytical framework. The data are analyzed through content analysis to identify Islamic character values and relate them to the problems faced by Generation Z. The findings indicate that the values embedded in the concept of al-‘abid al-muraqabah in Muraqi al-‘Ubudiyah, when internalized through Thomas Lickona’s tripartite framework of moral knowing, moral feeling, and moral action, demonstrate significant potential as both a conceptual foundation and a pedagogical strategy for mitigating nihilistic tendencies and restoring existential meaning among Generation Z in the context of modernity and digital culture
