Abstract

The development of social media has transformed the way public figures deliver educational messages to a broader and more interactive audience. This study aims to describe the forms of directive illocutionary speech acts and their functions in education-themed captions posted on the Instagram account @aniesbaswedan. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach based on John Searle’s (1979) speech act theory. The data source consisted of posts uploaded on the Instagram account @aniesbaswedan during the period of May–June 2025. Out of 104 posts identified, 23 were related to educational themes, and 17 of them contained directive illocutionary speech acts that were selected as the research data. Data were collected through documentation and note-taking techniques, while data analysis was conducted using the interactive model of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed four forms of directive speech acts: inviting (52.94%), requesting (17.65%), suggesting (17.65%), and commanding (11.76%). Among these, inviting was the most dominant form. The findings indicate that educational communication on social media tends to employ persuasive and participatory directive strategies to foster audience engagement. Therefore, directive speech acts function not only as a means of directing actions but also as an educational strategy for raising public awareness and encouraging participation in educational issues.
