University students are using AI-powered technologies more frequently as a result of the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), which has had a substantial impact on teaching and learning in higher education. The types, applications, and effectiveness of AI tools among Nigerian university undergraduates were examined in this study. Four research questions served as the study's compass. A multi-stage sampling procedure was used to pick 500 undergraduate students from Nigerian public universities. An expert-validated structured questionnaire was used to gather data, and a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.77 was used to determine reliability. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The results showed that ChatGPT, QuillBot, and Grammarly, were the most widely utilized AI tools, with students using them extensively. AI was seen to be moderately to highly effective at enhancing undergraduate reading and comprehension. Poor internet access, low digital literacy, a lack of institutional support, the expense of AI software, and worries about abuse were the main issues noted. The study concluded that while AI technologies improve academic efficiency and learning in the university, their effectiveness depends on sufficient infrastructure, appropriate training, and responsible use. Universities were advised to upgrade their ICT infrastructure, train students in AI literacy, and set explicit rules for moral behavior.
