The study investigates how exegetical epistemology shapes structural readings of the Qur’an by analyzing Sa‘īd Ḥawwā’s al-Asās fī al-Tafsīr. Existing scholarship has largely examined Ḥawwā within ideological and activist frameworks, leaving the epistemological foundations of his structural exegesis underexplored. Drawing on qualitative library research, this study reconstructs Ḥawwā’s sources of authority, methodological principles, and normative assumptions, and examines their application to Sūrat al-A‘rāf through thematic and structural analysis. The findings reveal that his exegetical framework rests on three interconnected pillars: the authority of tafsīr bi al-ma’thūr, the expansion of munāsabah into the structural principle of waḥdat al-khiṭāb (unity of discourse), and a normative synthesis of dalālah naṣṣiyyah (textual signification) and al-ghāyah al-shar‘iyyah (normative purposiveness). These foundations present Sūrat al-A‘rāf as a circular and progressive structure unified by the central theme of the enduring struggle between truth and falsehood, while positioning the surah as a transitional link within the Qur’anic arrangement. The study argues that Ḥawwā’s contribution extends beyond thematic exegesis, offering an epistemological model for contemporary Qur’anic structural studies that integrates textual coherence, analytical rigor, and pedagogical purpose.
