Abstract

This study analyzes the relevance between the concepts of self-esteem and gratitude from the perspective of hadith, with a focus on the hadith narrated by Sunan al-Tirmidhī No. 2034. This hadith is examined through a combined approach of isnād (chain of narrators) and matn (text) criticism and psychological analysis based on Morris Rosenberg’s self-esteem theory. In terms of sanad, the hadith was initially classified as ḍa‘īf, but its quality was upgraded to ḥasan li-ghayrih due to reinforcement from the narration of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī. In terms of matn, the hadith is considered sahih because it does not contradict the Qur’an, other stronger hadiths, or common sense. Field studies were conducted through interviews with five informants and measurements using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), which showed that individuals with high self-esteem tend to show gratitude, self-acceptance, and optimism. Conversely, individuals with low self-esteem showed symptoms of self-rejection and dissatisfaction, which can be interpreted as a form of ingratitude. These findings confirm that gratitude is a spiritual expression and plays an important role in forming a healthy self-image. Therefore, integrating prophetic values in hadith with a contemporary psychological approach can strengthen individuals’ psychological well-being amid the challenges of modern life.

Abstract

The discourse on gender equality in Islam is often constrained by religious interpretations that lack socio-historical sensitivity. One such example is the frequently cited hadith narrated by Ibn Mājah (No. 3993), which asserts that women constitute the majority of Hell’s inhabitants and are described as lacking in reason and religion. This hadith is often interpreted literally, without adequate contextualization, which leads to gender bias. This study attempts to re-examines the hadith using the qirā’ah mubādalah (reciprocal reading) approach, which emphasizes relational justice and the ethical parity between men and women. Methodologically, the study employs qualitative analysis based on literature review, including sanad and matan evaluation to assess the hadith’s authenticity, and thematic-contextual analysis to reinterpret its meaning. The findings affirm that the hadith is classified as ṣaḥīḥ li-dhātih, meeting the criteria of an unbroken chain (sanad muttaṣil), reliable and just narrators (‘ādil and ḍābiṭ), and free from shudhūdh or ‘illah. However, when approached through the lens of mubādalah, the statement that women are the majority of Hell’s inhabitants emerges not as an ontological indictment, but as a universal moral admonition. Likewise, the depiction of women as deficient in intellect and religion is shown to reflect the socio-cultural limitations of the time, particularly in terms of women’s access to public and spiritual domains.

Abstract

The issue of identity politics frequently causes controversy and societal conflict, which often results in polarization and social fragmentation. This study seeks to analyze Hamka’s perspective on identity politics through a close examination of his Qur’anic exegesis, with particular attention to the ideological construction embedded in his interpretation. The primary source of analysis is Tafsir al-Azhar, a work written by Hamka’s role not only as a religious scholar but also as a prominent social and political activist whose interpretive approach is marked by strong political undertones. The study focuses on Hamka’s interpretation of key Qur’anic passages related to identity politics, specifically Surah al-Rūm [30]: 1–7, Surah al-Baqarah [2]: 142–143, and Surah al-Mā’idah [5]: 51. By using critical discourse analysis and historical-literary framework, the research reveals that Hamka emphasizes the necessity of identity politics as a means of affirming Islamic solidarity and loyalty. His interpretation reflects the political climate of his time, particularly his resistance to government policies which links to the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI), and is significantly shaped by the context of his imprisonment during the New Order regime.

Abstract

The issue of women pursuing careers in the public sphere continues to be a subject of debate in contemporary social and academic circles. The stigma attached to career women not only reflects resistance to gender role change but also reproduces patriarchal discourse structures through religious authority. This study analyzes the construction of career women in Tafsīr Nūr al-Iḥsān by Sa‘īd b. ‘Umar Qāḍī using a qualitative-descriptive approach and an Islamic feminist framework. Data were obtained through literature review and unstructured interviews. The results of the analysis reveal three main ideas: (1) women are ontologically positioned as unequal to men; (2) women’s activities should be limited to the domestic sphere; and (3) women’s leadership is permitted on the condition of their husband’s consent and fulfillment of domestic roles. These findings suggest that the interpretation not only reflects traditional normative views but also functions as an ideological instrument in maintaining patriarchal gender structures. This study contributes to enriching Malay Jawi interpretation studies with a critical approach and opens new discourse in reading interpretations as an arena of contestation between tradition and gender emancipation in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the dimensions of maqāṣid-based interpretation in the thought of Hasyim Asy’ari. Despite his prominence in Indonesian Islamic scholarship, Hasyim Asy’ari has seldom been examined through the lens of Qur’anic hermeneutics. Yet, his writings frequently cite Qur’anic verses to substantiate and legitimize his intellectual positions. This study addresses two central questions, namely, how Hasyim Asy‘ari uses and interprets the Qur’an as articulated in his books Ādāb al-‘Ālim wa al-Muta‘allim and Al-Tibyān fī al-Nahy ‘an Muqāṭa‘ati al-Arḥām wa al-Aqārib wa al-Ikhwān, and how the maqāṣidī dimensions are reflected in both works. By using textual analysis, the study reveals two important points. First, Hasyim Asy‘ari’s interpretive framework aligns with the maqāṣidī-based approach, wherein the Qur’anic verses are interpreted to substantiate specific religious positions. However, his method reflects elements of thematic exegesis (mauḍū‘ī), while in terms of sources and interpretive orientation, his approach can be classified as reason-based interpretation (tafsīr bi al-ra’y), exhibiting an adabī-ijtimā‘ī style that emphasizes socio-ethical dimensions. Second, with regard to the discernible dimensions of maqāṣidī, Hasyim Asy‘ari’s Qur’anic interpretation resonates with the broader objectives of Islamic law, particularly the values of al-‘adālah (justice), al-ḥurrīyah (freedom), al-mas’ūlīyah (responsibility), and al-insānīyah (human dignity).

Abstract

T he increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Qur’anic studies has raised concerns about the reliability and epistemic authority of interpretations generated by AI. This study examines the issue of interpretive accuracy by evaluating how ChatGPT responds when explicitly asked to interpret verses based on Taf sīr al-Qurṭūbī . This study focuses on Surah al-Mā’idah [5]: 106–108, which discusses legal testimony, a theme rich in fiqh details. This study aims to assess whether ChatGPT accurately reflects al-Qurṭūbī’s exegetical thought or merely produces a general summary. Using qualitative methods, including literature review and comparative text analysis, ChatGPT’s responses were systematically compared with the original Arabic text of al-Qurṭūbī’s tafsīr . The results reveal significant gaps: ChatGPT frequently overlooks crucial legal arguments, misrepresents theological nuances, and fails to reproduce the distinctive interpretive structure of classical tafsīr . These limitations stem from the model’s inability to access verified exegesis corpora and its inadequate contextual understanding. Nevertheless, this study acknowledges the potential of ChatGPT in an educational context and provides accurate sources and ethical guidelines to support it. The research concludes that AI can assist in interpreting the Qur’an in a digital context, but it should not replace traditional scholarly authority.

Abstract

The Mu‘tazilah school of thought has played an important role in Islamic theology, especially in discussions about social and ethical issues. One of the well-known interpretations that reflects this thought is Tafsīr al-Kashshāf by al-Zamakhsharī, which takes a rational and critical approach to understanding the verses of the Qur’an. In today’s world, many social issues, such as justice, individual freedom, and human rights, are closely related to Mu‘tazilah principles. This study focuses on how al-Zamakhsharī interprets Qur’anic verses related to social and ethical issues from a Mu‘tazilah perspective. The main source of the study is Tafsīr al-Kashshāf, while additional references include books and articles discussing tafsīr and Mu‘tazilah theology. A descriptive-analytical approach is applied to understand how al-Zamakhsharī structures his arguments and how Mu‘tazilah principles are reflected in his interpretation. The results show that Tafsīr Al-Kashshāf strongly represents Mu‘tazilah beliefs, especially in its emphasis on justice and human freedom. Al-Zamakhsharī highlights the importance of reason in understanding the Qur’an and rejects the idea that fate completely determines human actions. Additionally, among the five core principles of Mu‘tazilah, three are particularly important in shaping moral and ethical values: al-‘adl (divine justice), al-wa‘d wa al-wa‘īd (divine reward and punishment), and amar ma’rūf nahi munkar (encouraging good and preventing evil).

Abstract

The increasing use of social media, particularly Instagram, has encouraged new forms of religious expression, including interpretive memes that discuss various social issues. This article critically examines the discourse on career women as articulated in five meme-based posts on the @akhiukhtiantiselfie account. The five posts contain quotations from the Qur’an, hadith, references from several websites, and opinions from religious figures. This study uses a qualitative method with a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework from Teun A. van Dijk. The results of the study show that, from a textual perspective, the discourse on career women in the interpretive memes of this account is shaped through a textualist approach of interpretation. From a social cognition perspective, the account owner views the phenomenon of career women on social media as a profession that is contrary to Islamic law. Meanwhile, from a social context perspective, the account owner's activities reflect an effort to raise public awareness about the dangers of the phenomenon of career women that is prevalent on various social media platforms. For the owner of the @akhiukhtiantiselfie account, the ideal role for women is in the domestic sphere; therefore, becoming a beauty vlogger or model promoting beauty products is considered unacceptable. However, they still allow women to work outside the home or engage in online commerce, provided certain strict conditions are met. Ultimately, this discourse construction aligns with Salafi’s interpretive patterns, as reflected in the authoritative references and theological arguments employed.

Abstract

The study of the Qur’anic verses revealed in a certain historical context (asbāb al-nuzūl) is often trapped in a textual approach that limits the meaning of the verse only to the background of the event. As a result, the potential for transformation of meaning and ethical messages that are relevant to the contemporary socio-religious context is neglected. One of the verses that is frequently interpreted in a narrow sense is QS. al-Tawbah [9]:6, which was revealed in the context of protection against the polytheists, so that they could hear the word of God. This study aims to review the verse through Abdullah Saeed’s contextual interpretation approach, by exploring its linguistic dimensions, socio-historical context, and potential moral and ethical messages in the reality of religious pluralism today. This study found that the verse implies an opportunity for da‘wā in religious plurality. This is based on the meaning of istajāra which not only means protection, but also points to closeness and peaceful coexistence; mushrikīn can be understood as a representation of adherents of other religions; and kalām Allāh includes all Islamic teachings, not limited to the literal Qur’an. This finding confirms that contextual reading allows the actualization of the inclusive values of the Qur’an as an ethical basis in building interfaith relations in a multicultural society.

Abstract

The tradition of writing Islamic works in the form of naẓm has become an integral part of Islamic scholarship, particularly in Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia. However, the number of Qur’anic exegesis works composed in the form of naẓm is still limited. This artcle critically examines the poetic-based interpretation in Tafsir al-Mubarok by Taufiqul Hakim and its contribution to the development of exegesis in the archipelago. This study uses a qualitative approach with textual analysis that combines ‘arūḍ theory and stylistics. Data was obtained from a study of primary manuscripts supported by secondary literature related to tafsīr , pesantren traditions, and linguistic studies. The results of the study show that the application of naẓm in Tafsir al-Mubarok reflects the structured use of ‘arūḍ theory, particularly in the selection of baḥr rajaz , which is an important element in the pesantren tradition. The application of ‘arūḍ rules not only maintains the beauty of the language but also ensures the effective and poetic delivery of the exegesis message. Taufiqul Hakim’s significant contribution lies in integrating pesantren tradition with a modern approach through the use of three languages (Arabic, Javanese, and Indonesian), the hanging translation ( makna gandul ), the pegon script, and a systematic latin writing system. He not only preserves the traditional form of tafsir but also recontextualizes the method of interpretation to remain relevant in contemporary academic dynamics. Thus, Tafsir al-Mubarok serves as an educational tool in pesantren environments and contributes to the development of Qur’anic exegesis in the Nusantara region.
