The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly influenced learning processes in higher education, particularly in shaping students’ critical thinking skills. The presence of AI offers various advantages, including easier access to information, assistance in completing academic tasks, and support for more personalized and flexible learning experiences. This study aims to analyze the roles, benefits, impacts, and challenges of AI utilization on students’ critical thinking skills within the context of higher education. The research employs a literature review method by examining and analyzing various relevant scholarly sources on the application of AI in education. The findings indicate that AI contributes to enhancing learning effectiveness through adaptive learning materials, broad access to information, and rapid, continuous feedback. On the other hand, uncontrolled use of AI may lead to technological dependence, reduced reflective and analytical thinking processes, and increased risks of academic integrity violations. Furthermore, several challenges were identified, including ethical concerns related to algorithmic bias, information validity, and the changing role of lecturers in facilitating student learning. The implications of this study highlight the importance of strengthening digital literacy, developing appropriate educational policies, and promoting the responsible and critical use of AI to support the improvement of learning quality without diminishing students’ critical thinking abilities.
