Abstract

Suboptimal breast milk production in postpartum mothers may hinder the success exclusive breastfeeding. This study aimed to determine the effect of a combination of Woolwich massage and warm ginger decoction compresses on breast milk production in postpartum mothers at Dr. Soekardjo Regional Hospital, Tasikmalaya City. Breast milk production in postpartum mothers is based on the concept of lactation physiology, which involves role prolactin in milk synthesis and oxytocin in milk ejection, influenced breast stimulation and adequate blood circulation within breast tissue. Woolwich massage stimulates the release prolactin and oxytocin hormones, while warm ginger decoction compresses help improve blood circulation and provide relaxing effect that supports breast milk production and ejection. This study employed quasi-experimental design with two-group pretest–posttest approach. A total 34 postpartum mothers were recruited using purposive sampling technique and divided into an intervention group and control group, each consisting of 17 respondents. The intervention group received combination of Woolwich massage and warm ginger decoction compresses, while the control group received Woolwich massage only. Data were collected using breast milk production observation sheet. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann–Whitney U Test because the data were not normally distributed based on the Shapiro–Wilk test. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test showed a p-value of 0.000. The Mann–Whitney U Test showed a p-value of 0.001, indicating  significant difference in breast milk production between the intervention and control groups after intervention. The combination of Woolwich massage and warm ginger decoction compresses had significant effect on increasing breast milk production in postpartum mothers at dr. Soekardjo Regional Hospital, Tasikmalaya City. This combination is expected to be used as  non-pharmacological intervention to help improve breast milk production in postpartum mothers.
