Bahan dasar minyak  lumas ini dapat dibuat dari minyak mineral, lemak hewani atau minyak nabati. Aditif ditambahkan ke dalam minyak lumas untuk meningkatkan mutu minyak lumas sesuai dengan kebutuhan diperbaharui
