This study aims to describe students' motivation for participating in the Basic Training program organized by the Tarbiyah Commissariat of the Padangsidimpuan Branch of the Islamic Students Association (Himpunan Mahasiswa Islam/HMI). Basic Training is the first stage of the HMI cadre process and is intended to develop students' intellectual, leadership, and Islamic values. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed to explore students' motivations. The participants were 60 active students from the Tarbiyah Commissariat of the Padangsidimpuan Branch. Data were collected through a questionnaire distributed via WhatsApp. The responses were analyzed narratively by organizing, describing, and interpreting the data to identify the main motivational factors. The findings show that students joined the Basic Training program primarily to improve their personal qualities. Most respondents viewed HMI as a platform for developing intellectual abilities, broadening their knowledge, strengthening critical thinking, and enhancing leadership skills. They also believed that the organization provides opportunities to deepen their understanding of Islamic values and apply these values in everyday life. In addition, participants considered Basic Training an opportunity to build self-confidence, improve communication skills, and expand social networks with fellow students. The study concludes that students' motivation to participate in HMI Basic Training extends beyond organizational involvement. Their motivations are closely related to personal, intellectual, spiritual, and leadership development. These findings highlight the important role of Basic Training in preparing students to become competent, responsible, and socially engaged future leaders.
