Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of the Trading Place learning strategy on students’ critical thinking skills in Grade X Indonesian language classes at SMKN 3 Mataram. The research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest–posttest design. The sample consisted of 25 students selected from class X TKI. Data were collected through a 25-item multiple-choice test as the main instrument, supported by observation and documentation. The instrument was tested for validity and reliability prior to implementation. Data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test at a 5% significance level. The results showed an increase in the average score from 10.68 in the pretest to 17.04 in the posttest. The t-test analysis indicated that the t-count value (4.20) was greater than the t-table value (1.711) with df = 24, indicating a statistically significant difference. These findings demonstrate that the Trading Place strategy effectively improves students’ critical thinking skills by promoting active participation, discussion, and reflection in the learning process. The study contributes theoretically to the development of participatory learning strategies and practically provides an alternative approach for enhancing higher order thinking skills in vocational education.
