Abstract

This study aims to explore the ethnomathematics concepts contained in the traditional paper plane game, while analyzing its potential as a manipulative learning medium in Elementary Schools. This study uses a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach, involving participatory observation, interviews, and documentation of elementary school students' play activities in Penjalinan Hamlet, Gondanglegi Kulon Village. The results show that the paper plane game contains a variety of mathematical concepts in each stage. In the basic material preparation stage, the concept of identifying the properties of rectangular plane shapes, calculating perimeters, and areas was found. In the folding stage, the application of symmetry transformations (axis and fold symmetry), angle division, and the formation of derived plane shapes such as triangles and trapezoids were identified. Furthermore, during the flight and modification stages, data collection (time and distance) and the application of ratios that affect the aircraft's aerodynamics were observed. It was concluded that paper planes not only serve to preserve sociocultural values and foster student creativity but can also serve as a contextual cognitive bridge to concretely conceptualize abstract geometry in the classroom.
