This study was motivated by the low ability of students in understanding mathematical concepts on statistics material and the limited use of innovative learning media that connect mathematical concepts with local culture. This study aimed to develop an e-comic learning media in the context of traditional Malay cultural games that is valid, practical, and effective in improving students’ mathematical concept understanding abilities. The research used the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE development model consisting of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The subjects of this study were eighth grade students of SMPIT Al-Maidani Perbaungan. Data were collected through expert validation sheets, teacher and student practicality questionnaires, and tests of mathematical concept understanding ability. The results showed that the developed e-comic media met the valid criteria with a media expert validation score of 0.75, material expert 0.76, teaching module validation 0.77, and posttest validation 0.67. The media was also categorized as very practical based on the teacher questionnaire score of 87.5% and student questionnaire score of 78.4%. The effectiveness of the media was indicated by students’ posttest results in the small group trial of 74.18% and field trial of 85.12% which were categorized as very effective. Therefore, the e-comic learning media in the context of traditional Malay cultural games is feasible to be used to improve students’ mathematical concept understanding abilities.
