Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was motivated by a shift in the meaning of the belis practice among the Abui people in Manetwati Village. Belis, which was originally understood as a symbol of respect, responsibility, and a bond of kinship, has gradually shifted in meaning to become more oriented toward material values and social status. This situation has given rise to various social problems, such as economic burdens, inter-family conflicts, and potential injustices that may conflict with Christian values. Therefore, this study aims to examine the practice of the belis tradition and to identify the theological-educational values embedded in its implementation among the Abui ethnic group in Manetwati Village. This study employs a qualitative approach with an exploratory research design. Data collection techniques included interviews and documentation involving traditional leaders, church leaders, and local residents. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the practice of belis among the Abui ethnic group in Manetwati Village continues to play a significant role as part of the traditional customs surrounding marriage. Belis is understood as a symbol of respect for women, men’s responsibility, and a bond strengthening family ties between both parties. Furthermore, the practice of belis was found to embody educational and theological values
