Abstract

Independence in Activity of Daily Living (ADL) is an important aspect of every individual’s life, including students with visual impairments who live in a boarding school environment such as SLB A Yapti Makassar. Boarding school life requires students to adapt, manage themselves, and carry out daily activities independently, particularly environmental cleanliness activities using basic cleaning tools such as a palm-fiber broom, dustpan, and trash bin. However, several obstacles are still found in the implementation of these activities, making it necessary to understand students’ perspectives on independence. This study aims to: (1) describe the ADL independence of students with visual impairments in using a palm-fiber broom, dustpan, and trash bin at SLB A Yapti Makassar; (2) identify the supporting factors of ADL independence among students with visual impairments in using these basic cleaning tools; and (3) identify the inhibiting factors of ADL independence among students with visual impairments in using these tools. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The research subject was one totally blind student, identified by the initials WD, who was in Grade IX of SMPLB at SLB A Yapti Makassar. Data were collected through interviews and documentation, while data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the student demonstrated positive ADL independence, as reflected in the ability to prepare cleaning tools, solve problems independently, and adapt to environmental demands. This independence was supported by spatial orientation, self-regulation, family support, school support, peer support, and habituation. The inhibiting factors were minor and situational, so they did not significantly hinder the student’s independence.
