Yayasan Pendidikan Fatahillah (YPF) Cilegon operates across two geographically separated locations, Serdang and Citangkil. The organization faces challenges in data exchange because files are transferred manually using flash drives, external storage devices, and instant messaging applications, resulting in document duplication, version inconsistency, and increased risks of data loss and unauthorized access. This study aims to design and develop a secure and cost‑effective Network Attached Storage (NAS) infrastructure based on Nextcloud, running on Raspberry Pi 5, and integrated with Tailscale VPN utilizing the WireGuard protocol to enable secure remote data access. The research employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using a two‑iteration Prototyping model, consisting of requirement gathering, quick design, prototype development, user evaluation, and refinement stages. The system was implemented using Raspberry Pi 5 with 8 GB RAM, NVMe SSD storage 512 GB, Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS, Apache web server, MariaDB database, and PHP runtime environment. Performance testing was conducted through direct file‑transfer measurements using 1 GB files over both local and VPN networks. The results showed average transfer speeds of 11 MB/s on the local network and 9 MB/s via VPN, indicating an acceptable 18% performance reduction due to encryption overhead. Functional testing confirmed that all main features—including authentication, file upload/download, folder management, file sharing, synchronization, and VPN connectivity—operated successfully. The findings demonstrate that the proposed NAS infrastructure provides an economical, secure, and reliable solution for centralized data management and remote collaboration in small‑ and medium‑scale educational organizations.
