A School Safety Zone (ZoSS) is a form of traffic engineering designed to protect pedestrian safety—particularly that of schoolchildren—by regulating vehicle speeds in the vicinity of designated school locations. This study analyzes the availability of ZoSS infrastructure, assesses relevant road performance, and evaluates the operational effectiveness of the ZoSS at SMP N 3 Adiwerna, Tegal Regency. Field data collection employed a quantitative approach, encompassing traffic volume counts, road capacity measurements, and vehicle speed observations. The collected data were analyzed using the 1997 Indonesian Highway Capacity Manual (MKJI) guidelines and a statistical Z-test. The analysis results indicate a road capacity of 3,366.9 pcu/hour, a peak-hour traffic volume of 1,972.7 pcu/hour, and a degree of saturation of 0.59, corresponding to Level of Service C. The observed average vehicle speed was 35.98 km/h, exceeding the established ZoSS speed limit of 30 km/h. The Z-test analysis reveals that the implementation of the ZoSS has not yet yielded statistically significant results in reducing vehicle speeds. Consequently, improvement measures—including infrastructure reinforcement and stricter traffic law enforcement—are required to enhance the operational effectiveness of the ZoSS and ensure student safety on the road.
