Analysis of Rhodamine B in Cotton Candy in Jambi City

Abstract

Cotton candy is a popular snack, especially among children. To improve its appearance, food coloring is commonly added. However, the illegal use of textile dyes such as Rhodamine B in food remains a public health concern in Indonesia. Rhodamine B is a synthetic dye prohibited for food use due to its harmful health effects. Data on Rhodamine Bsdegh contamination in cotton candy sold in Jambi City are still limited. To identify the presence of Rhodamine B in cotton candy sold in Jambi City. This study is a descriptive study using a qualitative laboratory approach. Samples were obtained from 32 cotton candy vendors selling at several locations in Jambi City. The examination included observation of the color characteristics and appearance of the cotton candy as well as identification of Rhodamine B content using a LabTest brand Rapid Test Kit. Of all the cotton candy samples tested, none tested positive for Rhodamine B (0%). Based on color characteristics, 97.1%  had normal color and 2,9% sample had abnormal color. Based on appearance characteristics, 97.1%  samples showed a normal appearance and 2.9% sample showed an abnormal appearance characterized by non-homogeneous color and a clumpy texture. All cotton candy samples sold in Jambi City tested negative for Rhodamine B. Most samples exhibited normal color and appearance characteristics, although one sample was found to have abnormal physical characteristics.
