Abstract

Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) play an important role in the national economy through their remittance contributions, yet many continue to face economic vulnerability due to limited savings, alternative income sources, and financial preparedness for their return to Indonesia. This Community Service Program (PKM) aims to enhance digital economic literacy and strengthen the economic resilience of members of the Special Branch Leadership of ‘Aisyiyah (PCIA) Hong Kong through the development of TikTok-based digital side hustles. The program employed a participatory mentoring approach comprising three stages: planning, implementation, and continuous evaluation. The implementation stage included digital economic literacy, training on TikTok features, assistance with TikTok Shop and TikTok Affiliate registration, practical content creation and live-streaming activities, and an introduction to digital career opportunities that participants could pursue after completing their overseas employment. The results indicate an improvement in participants’ understanding of productive social media use, digital content monetization opportunities, the use of TikTok Affiliate and live streaming as alternative income sources, and awareness of risks associated with fraudulent investment and unreliable digital job offers. The mentoring process also encouraged participants to perceive digital skills as economic assets that can be developed both while working in Hong Kong and after returning to Indonesia. The digital content-based side-hustle model therefore has the potential to provide an alternative strategy for diversifying income sources and strengthening the long-term economic independence of Indonesian migrant workers. The program also contributes to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8 by strengthening economic capacity, digital skills, and access to productive employment opportunities for migrant workers.
