Abstract

Academic engagement is particularly important for student-athletes, who must manage the competing demands of academic study and athletic participation. This study examined whether intrinsic motivation and perceived social support were associated with academic engagement among Indonesian student-athletes. Using a quantitative, cross-sectional correlational design, the study involved 126 student-athletes in Medan, Indonesia. Data were collected using the Intrinsic Motivation subscale of the Academic Motivation Scale–College Version, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and the SInAPSi Academic Engagement Scale. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that intrinsic motivation (β = .434, p < .001) and perceived social support (β = .412, p < .001) were significant positive predictors of academic engagement. The overall regression model was statistically significant, F(2, 123) = 73.65, p < .001, and explained 54.5% of the variance in academic engagement (R² = .545). These findings identify intrinsic motivation and perceived social support as important correlates of academic engagement among student-athletes. Therefore, efforts to strengthen student-athletes’ intrinsic motivation and foster supportive interpersonal environments may help sustain their engagement in academic activities.
