Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of critical thinking as a predictor of mental health among university students. A total of 360 undergraduate students in Indonesia participated, selected using convenience sampling. Data were collected both online through Google Forms and offline through direct distribution of questionnaires. Simple linear regression analysis was conducted after meeting the assumptions of normality, linearity, and homoscedasticity. The results indicated that critical thinking significantly predicted students' mental health (F = 12.160, p < 0.05, B = −0.899, t = −3.487). However, the strength of the relationship was relatively weak (R = 0.181, R² = 3.3%), indicating that critical thinking explains only a small proportion of the variance in mental health while other factors contribute more substantially. The negative regression coefficient indicates that higher critical thinking ability is associated with lower mental health problem scores. These findings suggest that critical thinking plays a role in predicting students’ mental health, though its contribution is limited. Therefore, universities should integrate critical thinking training into curricula as part of mental health promotion in higher education environments.
