The Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka curriculum encourages higher education institutions to promote contextual, interdisciplinary, and student-centered learning oriented toward the development of twenty-first-century skills. Within this framework, Project-Based Learning offers a relevant approach for connecting biological concepts with authentic local contexts, particularly the environmental and ecological potential of Lake Toba. This study examines the integration of Lake Toba’s local potential through Project-Based Learning in biology education and its alignment with the principles of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka curriculum. The study employed a literature review by examining relevant research and the development of learning materials associated with Project-Based Learning and local potential. The findings indicate that this integration supports students’ conceptual understanding, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and positive attitudes while providing meaningful learning experiences through contextual projects. The approach also reflects the curriculum’s emphasis on learning autonomy, authentic experiences, and active student participation. The study concludes that integrating Lake Toba’s local potential through Project-Based Learning provides a relevant framework for contextual biology education, although its implementation requires appropriate learning materials and strategies to address challenges in higher education.
