Mitigation of Gharar Elements in Online Thrifting Transactions: Sharia Economic Analysis on the @Loman.Thrift Digital Platform

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the mitigation of gharar elements in online thrifting transactions from an Islamic economic perspective, focusing on the digital platform @Loman.Thrift. The research addresses the problem of information asymmetry in online transactions, particularly in secondhand goods, and examines how sharia principles can ensure fair and transparent trade practices. Design/Methods/Approach – This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the business owner, direct observation of transaction activities on Instagram, Shopee, and TikTok, and documentation of digital transaction records. Data analysis follows the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, including data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, with triangulation techniques to ensure validity. Findings – The findings reveal that @Loman.Thrift effectively mitigates gharar through detailed product descriptions, visual documentation (photos and videos), live streaming features, and the use of third-party transaction guarantees such as Shopee escrow services. Additionally, the implementation of khiyar al-‘aib provides consumers with the right to return defective goods, enhancing transaction fairness and aligning with Islamic principles. Research Implications/Limitations – This study is limited to a single case, which restricts generalizability. It also focuses on specific platforms, without comparative analysis across different marketplaces. Originality/Value – This research contributes to the development of contemporary Islamic economic studies by demonstrating how digital platform features and the implementation of khiyar al-'aib (the option of defect) strengthen the characteristics of Bai' al-Mu'ayyan (sale of a specific identified object). This approach effectively reduces information asymmetry and gharar (uncertainty) in online transactions, offering a practical model for sharia-compliant digital commerce.
