Abstract

This study examines two processes that sustain religious values in Sasak belian healing practices in East Lombok: the construction of religious values in therapeutic action and their reproduction through intergenerational knowledge transmission. The study employed a qualitative ethnographic design. Ten informants were purposively selected, comprising two belian healers, five patients, one religious leader, one youth leader, and one health worker who had also experienced belian treatment. Data were generated through passive-participation observation, semi-structured interviews, documentation, and literature review, and were analyzed interactively through data condensation, coding, display, and thematic verification. Two main findings emerged. First, religious values take social form through the recitation of basmalah, salawat, dhikr, and prayers; the interpretation of healing as ikhtiar and wasilah; and the positioning of God as the ultimate source of recovery. Repeated practice, patient acceptance, and religious-leader legitimation turn these religious orientations into a shared framework that both authorizes and limits belian therapeutic authority. Second, belian families function as the main arena for reproducing values through practical learning, successor selection, genealogical-spiritual legitimation, and the understanding of healing knowledge as a moral trust. Transmission carries therapeutic knowledge together with norms governing authority, responsibility, and the proper use of knowledge. The findings show that the continuity of belian practice rests on the articulation between religiously framed healing and family-based transmission that preserves knowledge, authority, and moral order across generations.
